Tip: Macros in Notepad++

If you find yourself performing several of the same operations within Notepad++, you can use its Macro option to record and save them. This morning I was able to use it to record Paste, Find What, Replace With, and Replace All into one handy keystroke.

Fix mouse lag issue connecting from Mac OS to Windows 7 running Citrix XenDesktop

At work I use an iMac running Mac OS X 10.11, and I connect to my Windows 7 computer via Citrix XenDesktop. I am running Citrix Receiver 12.1.100 on the Mac, and XenDesktop VDA 7.6 on Windows.

The other day I started getting a weird issue: when I would connect in the connection would work fine, but whenever I moused over anything that required the OS to change the pointer, from say, an arrow to a text insertion marker, the mouse would lag, almost like when you have a desk surface too for your mouse. The cursor would move fine as long as I didn’t mouse over any text boxes or objects that would swap the pointer image. This issue did not happen if I connected to the Windows PC from my Windows laptop, and it didn’t happen if I connected via RDP from the same Mac.

I searched all over the web for solutions, and found several that didn’t apply to my situation, or just didn’t work: changing pointer options on the Windows PC, upgrading video drivers, upgrading Receiver, etc.

Finally I hit a page on Citrix.com listing features/updates of the new Receiver version I was already running on the Mac. One of the features was El Capitan support for split screen. I do have an additional monitor connected to my Mac, though I never use it when connecting to my Windows PC. However, I looked at the connection window and it was butted right up against the edge of the first monitor.

I dragged the edge of the window in just about 3/8″ and tried my mouse again. It worked perfectly. It appears that the window was maybe extending over into the second monitor just enough to make the Receiver plugin think it was pushing data to a split screen.

I see a lot of stuff online about, “Welcome to America, now speak English.”

I do think immigrants to America should learn to speak English.

However, I also think Americans should learn to speak English as well. And while we are learning how to write and speak English properly, perhaps we might also learn to be courteous to those who are new here.

299,999

A few weeks ago my friend Jeff rolled over 300,000 miles on his car. I mentioned to him that I was just about to roll 300k on my Toyota. A few days ago when my girls were both home from college I noticed I was just 24 miles of my milestone, so we got in the car and went for a drive. We often make late night drives throughout the year, talking, snacking, joking, listening to music at levels Heather and Elsa disapprove of.

We wandered for 23 miles and then headed home. The odometer stayed at 299,999. We rolled through town, around the school, back down our street, back up to Walmart. Still at 299,999. Just for giggles I googled “Toyota Corolla 299,999.” Turns out it’s a known issue:

Now I’m stuck there forever.
