Happy Father’s Day

“Since my customary farewell would appear oddly self-serving, I shall simply say. ..Good Luck.” Spock, speaking to his past self, in Star Trek (2009).

It’s kind of hard to write a post about Father’s Day without it sounding kind of self-serving, but we’ll try it out anyway.

So tomorrow is Father’s Day; what can you do for your dad? What does your dad really want? Lemme give you a dad’s perspective on it:

  1. Be Helpful. Whatever it is your dad is doing on Father’s Day, he probably wouldn’t mind some help. If he’s watching the game, sit down with him and watch. If he’s fixing his car, get him drinks and hand him tools. One of the greatest things in the world is having a kid who will run in the house and fetch something so you don’t have to crawl from under your car or house or whatever you are tied up in.
  2. Be Peaceful. I know it probably doesn’t seem like a big deal to you, but your dad doesn’t exactly rejoice in his decision to be a dad when his progeny are in the other room bickering and trying to stab each other’s eyes out. You absolutely cannot go wrong by doing your very best to get along with all your siblings.
  3. Be Thankful. Do you appreciate what your dad does for you? Let’s try again: do you have a clue what your dad does for you? I don’t know all your dads really well, but I can bet he gets up earlier than he would like after going to bed later than he would like, probably has a good-sized drive to work, and works hard all day long. He might even sacrifice some things that would be pretty cool in order to ensure that you have a good birthday, or get braces, or get better prepared for college. I’m not saying you have to go buy him a present. Just let him know you appreciate what he does for you.

The great thing about these: you can do them on a regular basis and they don’t cost you a dime.

Thank you: Teen Class Garage Sale

Thank you so much to everyone who helped with the Teen Class garage sale today; everyone who helped wash cars, donate items, donate time, donate money, set up, clean up, tear down, cook sweets, make lunch, and drive students to and from the event.

The end result was $250 raised to help send students to camp.

God is great.

Additional notes on Jephthah

The story of Jephthah is pretty tough, and not nearly as straightforward as other Old Testament narratives. With that in mind, here are some things to remember:

  1. God never commands us to do anything contrary to the Bible
  2. God never commands us to sin
  3. God never condones sin
  4. Your vow doesn’t remove the free will of others
  5. If you intend to make a vow to God, it should be well-thought out, carefully considered, in accordance with the Bible and finally, obeyed.

New Name

I changed the name of the site to more accurately reflect the nature of the class. An armory is actually a place that holds weapons, whereas a forge is a place where a smith creates or repairs horseshoes, tools, implements, weapons, and armor.

Hope you like it, and I’ll see you in class.

Assignment Sunday 5/17

Read Judges chapter 11. As I said in class on Wednesday, it is in your best interest to do so.
