The Leaf

The leaf lay on the pavement
In its haven of asphalt and iron
Underneath its fluorescent suns.

Though severed, the leaf still drew life
From the cool and efficient lamps
Slowly becoming a leaf of iron
Cold and resilient
But always missing the warmth
Of its old radiant sun
And the tree to which
It once belonged.
